Editor’s note: In the spring of 2024, the presentation that follows, in the form of an online petition, garnered more than 1500 signatures in support of saving Centennial Pool, and inspired the submission of a number of passionate, personal testimonials to the personal and community values of the pool.
“The Save Centennial Pool committee was formed to promote the continued existence of Centennial Pool. This was in response to a motion by Councillor Waye Mason (15.4.2), passed unanimously by HRM Council on June 28, 2022, directing staff to begin planning for the replacement of Centennial Pool and to outline the process to develop a new 50-meter pool, not on the peninsula, that meets Canada Games requirements for competitive swimming and diving. The motion included the prioritization of the rebuilding of Needham Community Centre. Reasons cited by Councillor Mason for the disposal of Centennial Pool included that it is nearing the end of its useful life and for economic development. The HRM staff report on the potential disposal of Centennial Pool is expected early in 2024.
Centennial Pool was built in 1967 to honour Canada’s 100th Birthday. After a recent renovation it is in the best condition it has ever been in and is far from the end of its useful life.
- It has been a training home to generations of divers and swimmer, both competitive and artistic, and remains so today.
- Centennial Pool is critical for our residents’ physical and mental well-being and serves the greater Halifax community of recreational swimmers, swimming instructors, coaches, masters swimmers, life guards, military and newcomers.
- For many, regardless of their age or ability, Centennial Pool has introduced them to the pleasures of swimming.
- The pool’s aquacise program has classes six days a week with a devoted and committed group of participants of all ages and physical abilities.
- For many seniors, Centennial Pool has been a life line, as it is not only a place to swim and exercise but also a place to meet people, form friendships and have social interactions.
- It is centrally located and easily accessible by foot, bike, bus and car and is also financially accessible, with a reasonable cost per visit.
With your signature, you can show HRM Council that for thousands of users, the disposal of Centennial Pool would be devastating. We fully support the building of a new 50-meter pool, but not as a replacement for Centennial Pool. The disposal of Centennial Pool results in a huge loss to all residents of HRM but particularly to those in the centre of the peninsula, a fast-growing part of the city which will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. With this petition we urge HRM Council to maintain Centennial Pool as a vital public asset for the continued use of the community. Please sign this petition if you believe in saving Centennial Pool.”
